Could Justin Bieber Perform With An Elvis Hologram?

The creators of Tupac's Coachella hologram reveal other artists they'd like to bring back to life: Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Michael Jackson.

King Street Cats: Consider Fostering Homeless or Acclimating ...

Kitten season is upon us, and that means?

the need for foster homes escalates rapidly. ?

King Street Cats had a local shelter contact us re. fostering?

5 (FIVE) different sets?of mamas and their babies this past week! ?

I came across a great article the other day?

that I thought I would share with you.

After reading this article, if you are interested in fostering,?

or have more questions,

please don't hesitate to drop us a note at Contact@KingStreetCats.org.

If you have fostered, share your experience(s)?

in the comments section below!

Why consider fostering, at a glance:

  • Most shelters and rescues across the country have a need for pet foster families willing to temporarily house and care for homeless animals.
  • Foster homes are needed for many different reasons, including overcrowded shelters, for pets with special needs (including medical), for kittens and puppies too young for adoption, for pets with a very low tolerance for shelter life, and for animals with little or no experience living in a home or with people.
  • Pets do better in foster homes than shelters. They are less stressed and less likely to develop fear-based behavior problems. Their foster family can more easily evaluate their true temperament. They often receive help to improve physical, emotional or behavioral issues. They can be socialized to a wide range of home situations involving children and other pets. Animals who?ve been abused can learn to trust people again.
  • What you can expect if you foster a pet will depend to a great extent on the type of pet you help and the circumstances the animal has lived in up to the point he enters your home. Some animals require a minimum of time and energy, while others will need a lot of time and attention to help them improve their chances for adoption.
  • The easiest, fastest way to get connected to a pet fostering program is to contact your local animal shelter or breed rescue group.

If you're interested in making a real hands-on difference in the lives of homeless pets,?there are many ways to help, depending on your time, resources and talents.

Many people volunteer at their local animal shelter for a certain number of hours each week or month. Other people have pets in need come to them, instead, by serving as foster families for animals awaiting adoption. The need for pet foster parents varies by location. Pets are fostered for lots of different reasons, including: ??????? An overflowing shelter ??????? An animal with special needs ? she might be pregnant or nursing, or recovering from an injury, illness, or surgery ??????? A kitten or puppy still too young to be adopted ??????? A pet showing significant stress-related behavior (pacing or hiding, for instance) ??????? An animal who has never lived in a home or had much contact with people who needs to be socialized to a home environment Breed rescue organizations also often have extensive networks of foster families willing to temporarily house a dog or cat awaiting a new forever home. Fostering sets off a positive domino effect. The more people willing to open their homes to foster pets, the more pets local shelters can accommodate -- and for longer periods. This gives each animal the best shot at finding a new home. Fostering is Better for Pets Living in a home with a family better prepares pets for adoption than institutional living. It's also much less stressful for the animal. Fostered pets are much less likely to develop fear or anxiety-related behavior problems than animals who spend time in a shelter environment. Foster families are better able to assess a pet's true temperament because they can observe the animal extensively in a home environment. Brief visits with an anxious or fearful shelter resident are often not adequate to learn the pet's true nature. Also, many foster parents spend time working with their furry charges to help overcome physical or emotional challenges or training deficits ? for example, house soiling. Fostering in a home in which there are children and other pets provides an animal the chance to be socialized to a wider range of family configurations. This opens up his possibilities for adoption to a greater number of families. Or ? if the foster pet can't be adequately socialized to small children, for example, the shelter or rescue will know this particular animal must be adopted to a family with no young kids. If an animal has been rescued from an?abusive situation, her foster family can build a bridge from her past (where humans were scary), to a hopeful future full of people who are caring and loving. What to Expect If You Decide to Foster This will depend a great deal on what type of pet you agree to foster, and the circumstances of the animal's life up to that point. General pet rules apply, of course. Dogs require more time and energy than cats. Puppies need more attention than almost any other type of pet. If your foster cat is recuperating from an illness or injury, she might need nursing care or extra TLC. If the dog you took in has no manners, he'll need your help to learn basic obedience commands like Sit, Stay and Down. A healthy kitten will need appropriate nutrition, a litter box, a few toys, lots of gentle handling, and your watchful eye to keep him from getting into anything around your home that might harm him. By contrast, a large breed adult dog who has lived up till now banished to a backyard and ignored, will need all the basics including daily walks and exercise. Plus she'll need to be house trained, leash trained, obedience trained,?socialized?? and there may also be?behavior problems?to address. Obviously, many more people can conveniently take in a healthy kitten or cat than a large, untrained adult dog. Both situations will be rewarding for the foster families who help these animals. But if you have the time and resources necessary to turn a rather unmanageable, large breed shelter dog into a balanced, mostly well-behaved pet, not only will you feel tremendous gratification ? you will also very likely save the life of that dog by dramatically improving the likelihood she'll be adopted. So both the effort and reward of fostering depends on the type of pet you agree to help. Perhaps you're not sure what type of pet you want to foster. Keep in mind the animals who languish the longest in shelters are?older pets, those with medical problems, dogs suffering from breed prejudice, shy pets, those who need to be the only animal in the home, large dogs, black dogs, and pets with special needs. In terms of who would benefit most from your help, an animal in any of those groups would certainly qualify.??

Why does Norway's Breivik invoke the Knights Templar? (+video)

Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in a twin terror attack in Norway last July, claims to be a member of a reborn 'Knights Templar.' What's the symbolism?

One of the highlights of today's testimony in the trial of Anders Behring Breivik, who is accused of the murder of 77 people during a bombing and shooting rampage in Norway, was the prosecutor's efforts to challenge Mr. Breivik's purported membership in the "Knights Templar."

Skip to next paragraph A sociologist for the defense talks about Andrew Breivik's world view.

Breivik claims to have helped "refound" the ancient military order as a force to fight immigration and multiculturalism in Europe. But why turn to a long-gone Christian order to symbolize his agenda today?

The Knights Templar, or "Templars," were a Christian order founded in the 10th century. Named for the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, the Templars initially protected pilgrims traveling through the Holy Lands, but eventually evolved into a powerful military force that waged war against the Muslims during the Crusades.

The Templars became so powerful, however, that European leaders grew to distrust the order. Early in the 1300s, King Philip IV of France launched a crackdown on the Templars that, with the help of Pope Clement V, eventually spread Europe-wide, destroying the order. Many members were tortured and tried for heresy by the Catholic Church.

But despite, or perhaps because of, their ancient history and sudden demise, the Templars still hold a solid grip on modern imaginations and pop culture. They are frequently depicted as the mysterious controllers of the world in books like Umberto Eco's "Foucault's Pendulum" and movies like "National Treasure." "The Da Vinci Code" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" set the Templars up as secret keepers of the Holy Grail. They even appear as the enemies in video games like "Assassin's Creed."

Certainly, the organization that Breivik claims to be a member of is equally mysterious. Breivik describes the organization as "a leaderless network, made to be self-driven cells.? He said that ?For militants, [Knights Templar] is meant to be a version of Al Qaeda." He has yet to name another member of the group, claiming that to do so would risk their being caught, though he has indicated that his "English mentor" can be found in London and that a Serb "war hero" living in Liberia is among the group's ranks.

Whether or not the Templars in which Breivik claims membership are real, the name is likely meant to evoke both the mysterious nature of the original Templars and their open war against Muslim forces during the Crusades. The historical Templars' modern reputation and supposed influence makes a strong symbolic counterpoint to terrorist groups like Al Qaeda.

Monitor guest blogger James Bosworth suggested that the use of the name may also be meant to legitimize the group as a moral one.

Last July, Mr. Bosworth noted that Breivik was not the first violent criminal to invoke the Templars: A Mexican criminal gang has also adopted the name and some of the associated symbolism. But Bosworth concludes that "The Mexican Knights Templar code of conduct appears to be a false appeal to Mexico's citizens," something that could also be argued of Breivik's use of the Templar mythology. "The Knights Templar label is a failed attempt to grant historical legitimacy to a violent act that truly has no justification," Bosworth wrote.

Earth Day and every day gardening with children

Earth Day ? or any day ? is the peak time to be gardening with children, sowing the seeds of a lifelong habit.

With Earth Day upon us, not to mention the warmer and longer spring days, many of us have been heading into our gardens. Around much of the Northern Hemisphere, this is the peak time to sow some seeds into the ground, as well as plant a lifelong gardening habit into the children in our lives.

Susan Sachs Lipman is the author of "Fed Up with Frenzy: Slow Parenting in a Fast-Moving World," which grew out of her award-winning blog,?Slow Family Online. Gardening helps families spend time together outdoors, take pride in growing our own food, and connect to others who have lived on the land before us. Even though gardening offers a bounty of simple wonder, beauty and fun for even the smallest children, it doesn?t hurt to employ a few methods for getting and keeping them especially engaged.

Here are some simple ways to maximize your child?s interest in the garden.

Are you a Helicopter Parent? Take our quiz!

Let children select some plants they want to grow.

Something magical happens when one has ownership of a project from its initial stages. When choosing plants, check that you have the right growing conditions for them to help ensure a successful experience. Planting information is available on seed packets and through garden-supply store folks, who are generally very helpful. You can choose seeds, young seedlings, or a combination of the two. Seeds are more cost-effective and can be especially rewarding and wondrous. Bedding plants of course give your garden instant color.

Some plants that come up quickly, and are easy to plant and grow, include nasturtiums, peas, sunflowers and beans.

(As an aside, my daughter always chose marigolds to plant, just like I did I when I was a kid. They?re so colorful and cheery and happen to be easy to grow from seedlings or seeds. Perhaps many children are drawn to bright marigolds.)

Chop chores into small blocks.

Kids can lose interest if the project seems daunting. Try to break up the tasks into doable chunks and over more than one session if necessary.

Make a sign that identifies the garden, area, or container as the child?s.

The sign can be as simple as a painted rock or as ambitious as a mosaic-tile kit from an art-supply store. If other people are sharing the garden, you can still identify different children?s plantings by putting each name on a wooden stick (available in bags at garden-supply stores) in permanent ink.

Create a fun space in the garden.

Create a hiding place with trellises or plantings, or plant a sunflower house by planting sunflowers in the shape of a large playhouse that you can later go inside. (Leave room for your door!) Designate a tree stump to serve as a table for tea parties, or decorate an area with whimsical objects you make or find. For instance, use pipe cleaners and beads to make simple butterflies, ladybugs, mushrooms and flowers, and then place them among the plants.

Retired Boeing 737 repurposed as garage-kept flight simulator (video)

Image

A fresh concept it's not, but a fresh look? Yeah, we'll take that. California resident, air traffic controller, pilot and all-around gentleman James Price has converted the actual nose of a 1969 Boeing 737 into his own personal flight simulator. According to the man himself, he "gutted" the bird, installed "all new" parts, slid it into his garage and... well, took a few minutes to show it to the world. While pretty much any flight sim owner would claim that his or hers was "just like the real thing," it's hard to deny that fact with this one. We're told that it took some three years to complete, and the end result leaves no doubt of James' toiling. Head on past the break for the vid.

Space Shuttle Discovery salutes Washington on historic final flight

As historic flights go, this has to be right up there with the best of 'em. Space Shuttle Discovery performed a final fly-by over the capital, and created a trail of excited spotters as it did so. Perched atop a Boeing 747, the iconic craft was flying at a relatively low 1,500 feet according to NASA. Pictures of the voyage have been popping up on social media and image sharing sites as it headed in from the west, before coming to its final resting place at a special off-shoot of the Smithsonian Institute's National Air and Space Museum near Dulles Airport.
