New Flooring: Things To Consider - Article Niche

article submission
New Flooring: Things To Consider

??Image may be subject to copyright.

Cost of Project: $$$$$

Location in the House: flooring

S o you decided that your home is in need of some new flooring. Perhaps it?s the flooring in one of your bathrooms or maybe even the flooring in the kitchen or living room. Regardless of where you believe new flooring is needed there are a multitude of things to consider and just as many decisions to make.
?
Like all other home improvement projects it?s a good idea to the very least consult with a professional contractor. Flooring contractors can advise you on what will work best in your home given the climate it resides in, the foot traffic it sees, and any potential abuse it might have to endure. A professional can also help homeowners rework their project so that it?s workable with their budget.

Not long after a contractor has been found and hired, homeowners will need to begin looking over the many different types of flooring available for their home. Some homeowners will have a specific type of flooring in mind even before hiring a contractor but will have to make some compromises after their initial consultation and realizing that, that type of flooring may not be suited for their home or for the environment that it resides in. Among the many different types of flooring for a home are tile, linoleum, carpet, hardwood flooring, and even marble.

Selecting flooring that not only complements your home but will be resistant to environmental hazards is the first key to success in such a project.

After flooring is then selected a contractor and his/her team can begin work on the actual project. Though there are some homeowners who prefer to tackle a project such as this themselves, the details and intricacies of such a project really necessitate the hiring of a contractor. A contractor will take precise measurements and will begin cutting and forming your new flooring at the very beginning of a project. After this portion of the project has concluded new flooring can be laid down and then set. You will need to keep in mind that different types of flooring will require different types of installation and different times for setting. A good example of this is tile. While installing and setting tile usually doesn?t take more than a day or so, it can?t be walked on for 1 to 2 days after that.

Furthermore a contractor will need to return and pour in grout once the tile cement has dried, rendering that floor inaccessible for another day or two.

Once your new flooring has been set it?s a good idea to carefully examine your new flooring for flaws or any other issues. This is a good idea because once a contractor finishes the project they may require you to sign some paperwork acknowledging that the job has been completed to your satisfaction. Finding flaws after signing paperwork means you?ll have to pay for that contractor, or another, to come back and fix the problem.

Once the project has been completed to your satisfaction and all paperwork is then signed you?ll be surprised at just how much more warm and welcoming your new flooring makes the room it resides in. So big is the change that it?s not uncommon for individuals who have new flooring put in to return to the same room for further remodeling. New flooring can pave the way for new furniture, new window decor, and even new paint. How far you take such a project is up to you.

Whales Adjust Their Hearing Sensitivity

When warned of a loud noise, a false killer whale reduced its hearing sensitivity in anticipation of the sound. Sophie Bushwick reports

Have you ever wanted to turn down the volume at a deafening concert or noisy bar? Envy the whale: a new study finds that toothed whales can reduce their own auditory sensitivity when they expect a loud sound. The work is presented at this week?s Acoustics 2012 meeting. [Paul E. Nachtigall and Alexander Ya Supin, "Immediate changes in whale hearing sensitivity"]

Whales and dolphins rely on their responsive hearing to interpret returning echolocation clicks. Previous research suggested that these marine mammals could dull their hearing before uttering outgoing echolocation clicks, which are very loud. Could they use the same coping mechanism for external noises?

To find out, researchers trained a false killer whale that a loud noise would always follow a brief warning signal. Then, they attached suction-cup sensors to the outside of the whale?s head and played the signal. The sensors measured brainwaves that indicated the whale did reduce its hearing sensitivity in expectation of a clamor. The researchers hope to test other species as well.

Loud noises from ships can disturb whales. To accommodate marine life, perhaps vessels could emit signals before making a ruckus, warning whales to tune us out.

Dancer: $1,000 buttocks enhancement damaged lungs

(AP) ? A Philadelphia woman who calls herself the "Black Madam" was ordered Wednesday to stand trial on allegations she administered illegal buttock-injections, procedures that authorities say caused serious medical problems in at least one case.

Padge Windslowe, 42, faces charges of aggravated assault and deceptive practices related to a so-called pumping party in Philadelphia.

An exotic dancer testified at a preliminary hearing Wednesday that she paid $1,000 for the injections on a dining room table. She said she met Windslowe through fellow dancers. The dancer said Windslowe had silicon in a water bottle and used Krazy Glue to close four injection sites.

The 23-year-old said she later suffered serious lung damage and was hospitalized for more than two weeks with respiratory problems. A doctor testified that the dancer has silicone particles on her lungs that can't be removed and can prove fatal.

Police believe Windslowe also injected 20-year-old London tourist Claudia Aderotimi, who died last year. Aderotimi complained of chest pain and difficulty breathing following the procedure at a hotel near Philadelphia International Airport. No charges have been filed in her death as detectives await extensive autopsy test results.

Windslowe was being held on $750,000 bail.

U.N. and Iran agree to keep talking on nuclear

VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran and the U.N. nuclear watchdog ended two days of talks on Tuesday by agreeing to meet again next week, just two days before Tehran resumes negotiations with world powers concerned it may be seeking to develop atomic bomb capability.

While both sides were upbeat about the discussions, which will continue on Monday, there was no word on whether the U.N. agency had made progress towards one of its main aims - to secure access to a suspect military site near Tehran.

"We had a good exchange of views and we will meet again on Monday," International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Deputy Director General Herman Nackaerts told reporters at the Iranian diplomatic mission in Vienna where the meeting took place.

Standing next to him, Iranian Ambassador Ali Asghar Soltanieh was more positive. "We had fruitful discussions in a very conducive environment. We have had progress," he said.

Neither side gave details about the content of the talks and they did not say if they discussed Iran allowing U.N. inspectors to visit the Parchin military site where the watchdog suspects nuclear bomb-relevant research has been carried out.

Western diplomats, watching the meeting for any sign Iran is ready to make concrete concessions ahead of the encounter in Baghdad next week, were not convinced.

"It is too early to say whether progress was made. There are apparently some serious sticking points," said one, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"The onus remains on Iran to address the agency's - and international community's - concerns about its nuclear program."

The IAEA had hoped to secure agreement on access to Iranian sites, documents and officials involved in suspected development work that could be put to use producing nuclear explosives.

Two previous rounds of talks in Tehran this year with U.N. inspectors failed to make any notable progress, especially on their request to go to Parchin.

CONCRETE ACTION

Iran and the powers involved in nuclear diplomacy - the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany - revived negotiations in Istanbul last month after a 15-month hiatus during which the West cranked up sanctions to unprecedented levels - targeting Iran's oil trade and banks.

The resumption of diplomacy offers a chance to defuse that tension as well as worries about a new Middle East war.

Israel, widely believed to hold the Middle East's only nuclear arsenal, has, like the United States, not ruled out military action to stop Iran's nuclear progress if it deems diplomacy has failed.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Iran had yet to show it was "willing to take concrete action to address concerns about possible military dimensions of its nuclear program, which is what we will look for in Baghdad."

A step-by-step process "should start with steps by Iran to build confidence in its nuclear activities," he told parliament.

The IAEA, the U.N. agency tasked with preventing the spread of nuclear arms, said before the meeting that its priority was to visit Parchin where Iran may have conducted high-explosives tests relevant for developing atomic arms capability.

"The primary focus of our discussions was how to clarify issues related to possible military dimensions of Iran's nuclear program," Nackaerts said.

The parties considered options for taking the "agency verification process forward in a structured way," he said.

Iran, which rejects Western accusations it is seeking nuclear weapons, has resisted previous requests by the IAEA to go to the Parchin complex, southeast of Tehran.

An IAEA report last November found that Iran had built a large containment vessel there in 2000 to conduct tests that the U.N. agency said were "strong indicators of possible (nuclear) weapon development".

Western diplomats say they suspect Iran is cleaning the Parchin site to remove incriminating evidence.

One envoy told Reuters he had seen satellite imagery showing vehicles near the place the IAEA wants to see, and an apparent stream of water coming from the building.

Iran's Foreign Ministry has dismissed the allegations, saying nuclear activities cannot be washed away.

A Vienna-based expert who declined to be identified said it would be difficult, but not impossible, to clean possible traces of uranium or substitute materials from a site.

A Western priority is for Iran to halt the higher-grade uranium enrichment work it started two years ago and has since expanded, potentially shortening the time needed to build a bomb.

Refined uranium can be used to fuel nuclear power plants, which is Iran's stated goal, or provide material for bombs if processed further, which the West suspects is the country's ultimate intention.
