Don Gailer pledged not to abandon his young guns after Whitehaven misfired in yesterday?s 48-16 demolition at Doncaster.
Richard Varkulis
The coach handed a chance to a string of young players in the Championship One opener and Haven were hit by an eight-try blitz. But he hinted there would be no wholesale cull of players following the defeat.
?I don?t think you can just throw them out,? he said. ?You can?t just put them up, let them make mistakes and then ditch them. Do that and you are then dealing with a whole new kettle of fish in confidence terms.
?They need to learn from those mistakes and make sure they don?t happen again.?
Haven trailed 30-6 at the break and went on to produce a much stronger effort in the second-half.
?We probably only made two mistakes in the second-half and they scored off both,? he added. ?Our completion rate in that
half was about 85 per cent and our attitude was good.
?But at this level we can?t let the game get away from us in the first 40 and try to haul it back in the second 40.
?Everyone will be down but you can?t just look at the bad stuff. Take the performances of Carl Rudd, Stephen Fox and Martyn Wilson, who didn?t do much wrong, and Andreas Bauer involved himself in the game a bit more.
?We were also probably a bit unlucky as Richard Varkulis hurt his knee early on and later wanted to go back on to try to help turn it around. That showed his character.
?You can take plenty of good stuff from it ? except the scoreboard.?
Former Super League star Paul Cooke was the star of the show for Doncaster, netting 24 points, including two tries, and he was ably supported by young scrum-half Kieran Hyde. ?Both their halves were great,? said Gailer. ?I had seen Cooke on DVD and we were going to get at him.
?We didn?t do that in the first-half, but when we did it in the second, we tested him a little.?
Second-row Lee Doran will return from suspension next week while injured three-quarters Craig Calvert and Scott McAvoy will also be back if fit.
