If you're lucky enough to have a phone running the latest version of Android, an update to Google Now is rolling out Wednesday?that lets you check movie times, receive?emergency alerts?and get the latest scores from the ballgame.
The Google Now service gives personalized capsule responses to common queries about current and local events. The feature was announced in June, but there are still new "cards" (as the special search results are called) being developed.
The latest update brings some extremely practical new cards to Android 4.1 users. One card brings up local movie showtimes, which is probably what you're looking for if you search for a theater or film on your phone. Another (just in time for Isaac) allows emergency messages like storm warnings and earthquake alerts to be pushed to your phone.
And to the delight of many sports fans, another card lets you keep up to date with any of 140 soccer, football, hockey and baseball teams. You can select your favorites from a list or search for them, and can then choose to receive news?before, during?or after games (or all three).
If you're running Android 4.1, you can download the improved?app via the Google?Play Store, or very possibly your phone has already detected that the update is ready and will download it automatically.

Living in poverty is often accompanied by conditions that can negatively influence cognitive development. Is it possible that being bilingual might counteract these effects? Although previous research has shown that being bilingual enhances executive functioning in middle-class children, less is known about how it affects lower income populations.
In a study forthcoming in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, psychological scientist Pascale Engel de Abreu of the University of Luxembourg and colleagues examine the effects of speaking two languages on the executive functioning of low-income children. "Low-income children represent a vulnerable population," says Engel de Abreu. "Studying cognitive processes in this population is of great societal importance and represents a significant advancement in our understanding of childhood development."
Existing research, conducted with older bilingual children and bilingual adults from middle class backgrounds, suggests that knowing two languages may have different effects on different aspects of executive functioning: while being bilingual seems to have a positive influence on the ability to direct and focus attention (control), researchers have found no such benefit for how people encode and structure knowledge in memory (representation). Engel de Abreu and her colleagues hypothesized that this pattern would also hold for younger bilingual children who were low-income.
A total of 80 second graders from low-income families participated in the study. Half of the children were first or second generation immigrants to Luxembourg, originally from Northern Portugal, who spoke both Luxembourgish and Portuguese on a daily basis. The other half of the children lived in Northern Portugal and spoke only Portuguese.
The researchers first tested the children's vocabularies by asking them to name items presented in pictures. Both groups completed the task in Portuguese and the bilingual children also completed the task in Luxembourgish.
To examine how the children represented knowledge in memory, the researchers asked them to find a missing piece that would complete a specific geometric shape. The researchers also measured the children's memory, using two different tasks to see how much visual information the children could keep in mind at a given time.
The children then participated in two tasks that looked at their ability to direct and focus their attention when distractions were present. In the first task, they had to find and match 20 pairs of spacecrafts as quickly as possible, a task that depended on their ability to ignore all the non-matching spacecrafts. In the second task, the children were presented with a row of yellow fish on a computer screen and they had to press a button to indicate which direction the fish in the center was facing. The other fish either pointed in the same or opposite direction of the fish in the middle.
Although the bilingual children knew fewer words than their monolingual peers, and did not show an advantage for representation tasks, they performed better on the control tasks than did the monolingual children, just as the researchers hypothesized.
"This is the first study to show that, although they may face linguistic challenges, minority bilingual children from low-income families demonstrate important strengths in other cognitive domains," says Engel de Abreu.
The researchers believe that the findings could inform efforts to reduce the achievement gap between children of different socioeconomic backgrounds. "Our study suggests that intervention programs that are based on second language teaching are a fruitful avenue for future research," says Engel de Abreu. "Teaching a foreign language does not involve costly equipment, it widens children's linguistic and cultural horizons, and it fosters the healthy development of executive control."

Research could lead to the development of enhanced bio-sensors for healthcare and more efficient solar cells and displays
Researchers at King's College London, in collaboration with European research institutes ICFO (Barcelona) and AMOLF (Amsterdam), have succeeded in mapping how light behaves in complex photonic materials inspired by nature, like iridescent butterfly wings. Scientists have broken the limit of light resolution at the nanoscale and delivered a fundamental insight into how light and matter interact, which could lead to the development of enhanced bio-sensors for healthcare and more efficient solar cells and displays.
Optical measurements of light waves at the nanoscale have always been limited by the resolution of the optical microscope, but researchers were able to break this limit using a new technique which combines electronic excitation and optical detection, to explore the inside of a photonic crystal and study the confinement of light. Working with a spatial resolution of 30 nanometers, scientists examined the structures at a resolution more than ten times smaller than the diffraction limit for light, revealing a greater understanding of how light interacts with matter to create, for example, the visible iridescence phenomena observed in nature on the wings of butterflies.
Dr Riccardo Sapienza, from the Department of Physics at King's, said: 'We were thrilled in the lab to observe the finer details of the photonic crystals that were simply inaccessible before. This is very important as it allows scientists to test optical theories to a new level of accuracy, fully characterise new optical materials and test new optical devices.'
The collaborative research has been published in the journal Nature Materials.
The team constructed an artificial two-dimensional photonic crystal by etching a hexagonal pattern of holes in a very thin silicon nitride membrane. Photonic crystals are nanostructures in which two materials with different refractive indices are arranged in a regular pattern, giving rise to exotic optical properties. Natural photonic crystals can be found in certain species of butterflies, birds and beetles as well as in opal gemstones where they give rise to beautiful shimmering colours.
The photonic crystal inhibits light propagation for certain colours of light, which leads to strong reflection of those colours, as observed when such materials 'catch the light'. By leaving out one hole, a very small cavity can be defined where the surrounding crystal acts as a mirror for the light, making it possible to strongly confine it within a so-called 'crystal defect cavity'.
The scientists based their research methods on a technique used in geology, called cathodoluminescence, whereby a beam of electrons is generated by an electron gun and impacted on a luminescent material, causing the material to emit visible light. Professor Albert Polman and his group in AMOLF modified this technique to access nanophotonics materials. He said: 'In the past few years we have worked hard with several technicians and researchers to develop and refine this new instrument.'
Dr Sapienza said: 'Each time a single electron from the electron gun reaches the sample surface it generates a burst of light as if we had placed a fluorescent molecule at the impact location. Scanning the electron beam we can visualise the optical response of the nanostructure revealing features 10 times smaller than ever done before.'
Professor Niek van Hulst, ICFO, said: 'It is fascinating to finally have an immediate view of the light in all its colours inside a photonic crystal. For years we have been struggling with scanning near-field probes and positioning of nano-light-sources. Now the scanning e-beam provides a local broad-band dipolar light source that readily maps all localised fields inside a photonic crystal cavity.'
With major advances in nanofabrication techniques it has become possible to construct artificial photonic crystals with optical properties that can be accurately engineered. These structures can be used to make high-quality nanoscale optical waveguides and cavities, which are important in telecommunication and sensing applications.
Dr Sapienza said: 'Our research provides a fundamental insight into light at the nanoscale and, in particular, helps in understanding how light and matter interact. This is the key to advance nanophotonic science and it can be useful to design novel optical devices like enhanced bio-sensors for healthcare, more efficient solar cells and displays, or novel quantum optics and information technologies.'

ScienceDaily (Aug. 17, 2012) ? Researchers in India have developed a total cholesterol test that uses a digital camera to take a snapshot of the back of the patient's hand rather than a blood sample. The image obtained is cropped and compared with images in a database for known cholesterol levels.
Writing in the International Journal of Medical Engineering and Informatics, N.R. Shanker of the Sree Sastha Institute of Engineering and Technology and colleagues describe how they have developed a non-invasive way to test cholesterol levels in patients at increased risk of heart disease. Their approach is based on the creation of a large database of cholesterol levels recorded using standard blood tests and linked to a standardized photograph of the hand for each patient; cholesterol is concentrated in the creases of one's fingers. They developed an image-processing computer program that compares the image from a new patient with the thousands of entries in the database and matches it to a specific cholesterol reading.
Measuring the amount and type of cholesterol circulating in the blood is an important risk factor in cardiovascular disease. Excess cholesterol not used by the body in making hormones and building cells is laid down on the inner wall of arteries as a waxy plaque, which can reduce the normal flow of blood potentially causing heart problems and increasing the risk of cerebral stroke. Total cholesterol is a useful early indicator, although more detailed testing that distinguishes between the HDL high-density lipoprotein) and LDL (low-density lipoprotein) and triglycerides are needed for a more accurate health assessment of patients found to have high total cholesterol. It is LDL, so-called "bad" cholesterol that contributes to the formation of arterial plaques, atherosclerosis. The presence of different total levels of cholesterol can be revealed through image analysis of the skin.
A non-invasive and inexpensive method for cholesterol screening would allow this risk factor be determined in much larger patient populations without the need for costly and inconvenient blood tests. The team will also soon publish details of the extension of this work to classifying cholesterol type using their approach.

As one of the classical smartphones from HTC, htc wildfire s has tons of fans over the world. And for cell phone accessories manufacturers and wholesalers, htc wildfire s accessories are popular items. TVC Mall has got a batch of hot htc wildfire s cases for sale right now!
In case you haven?t heard about it, TVC Mall is one of the best online store form china, which is available for both wholesale and retail. As a professional cell phone accessories and parts wholesaler, TVC Mall is famous for Apple accessories and other popular brands like htc, Samsung, blackberry, etc. As for HTC accessories, not only htc wildfire s, you can find different accessories for almost all the popular htc smartphones such as htc one x serial, sensation serial and desire serial etc. And all the products are well categorized by phone models, so users can easily find what they want. For example, users can find htc wildfire s cases under the ?HTC Wildfire S? category.
TVC has got different types cases in different styles and materials. There are cute ones with famous cartoon character patterns, cool ones with simple designs, business ones with vertical flip styles, etc. And one of the best parts is, the prices are no more than 3 US dollars! The prices will be cheaper if the quantity is bigger. And most cell phone parts and accessories from TVC Mall have one-year warranty, so no need to doubt the quality.
And once you come to TVC Mall, there would be one specific sales person serve you. You can have her work mail address and work phone so you can reach her. Whatever issues you come across, you can turn to her for help.? The excellent service is one of the things make tvc stand out other than high quality and competitive prices.
Now and then I hear from readers who are concerned about online security. How concerned should preppers be about being tracked online? They wonder whether it?s safe to make purchases from my site or other prepper sites. In fact, is it even safe to view such sites?
I?ve assured readers that, to the best of my knowledge, any tracking being done is by advertisers who are more interested in their buyng habits than the government is in gathering data. Of course, that may not always be the case.
The main thing is to practice common sense by not deliberately revealing too much about yourself online.
Back in the spring I interviewed Riverwalker for DestinySurvival Radio on the subject of OP SEC and how preppers can practice discretion to protect themselves and their families. I wrote a post asking the question, Are you protecting one of your most valuable assets?
The asset I was referring to is personal privacy. I?m a firm believer in exercising discretion online. For example, if you look up my personal Facebook page, you?ll learn very little about me personally. In fact, if it weren?t for using Facebook as a tool to drive traffic to this site, I wouldn?t have a Facebook page at all.
But is my aloofness online enough?
Not according to Conrad Jaeger. He?s written an e-book called Deep Web Secrecy and Security ? Everything to stay one step ahead of the Bad Guys. I?ve chosen it as a DestinySurvival Amazon Pick because he makes an important contribution to privacy issues for preppers.
The other day I received a press release about Deep Web Secrecy and Security, and I want to share its most important content with you. Draw your own conclusions and see if this e-book is for you.

You probably wouldn?t submit to having your home searched without a court order, so why allow the authorities to read your emails and monitor everything you do on-line?
If you are buying survival supplies on the Internet and looking up firearms then you are almost certainly on a watch list. These days everybody is a suspect and all our on-line activities are being logged somewhere.
And if things are bad now, just wait until the Utah Data Center comes on-stream in 2013 when absolutely everything you say or do on the Internet will be logged and analyzed and used to profile you the way they do in the movie Minority Report.
From totalitarian regimes to outwardly democratic governments, there is a growing demand for access to people?s personal data. They want to read your emails and they want to know who your friends are.
Personal information is a commodity today. It?s bought and sold and analyzed, and then it?s used to profile you for advertisers, campaign organizers, governments and criminals, stalkers and trolls. But none of this need happen.
Curiously, one might wonder why governments and the like are going to all the trouble of tracking us and storing our data, especially when they are ostensibly trying to catch pedophiles and terrorists.
As it happens, the really bad guys are not using the Surface Web to communicate. They are already very Deep and well ahead of the game. A cynic might wonder if there were ulterior motives in wanting to keep such tight tabs on us all.
But you don?t have to be up to no good to want to keep your on-line activities to yourself. Why can?t ordinary people be anonymous, too?
?Deep Web Secrecy and Security? uses the secrets of the Deep Web to protect you and your family, your private and business interests, your views and your freedoms.
?The Internet was never conceived to be the preserve of commercial interests. It should not be a hunting ground for law enforcement. The time has come to take back control,? says the book?s author Conrad Jaeger.
This Inter-active e-book with direct links to Surface and Deep Web will show you in simple terms how to:
Travel the Deep Web
Protect Yourself On-line
Set up Secure Communications
Avoid Unwanted Attention
Blog and Post Anonymously
Access Banned Websites
Erase & Protect your Activities
Upload and Download Secretly
Hide and Encrypt Anything

You should be aware that, in my opinion, Deep Web Secrecy and Security gets technical and recommends fixes which may be beyond the skill level of many of us. On the other hand, you may be all right if you apply adequate time and thought to following directions. Or you may want to recruit help to implement several of the recommendations.
But this e-book also contains simple suggestions nearly everyone should be able to perform. For example, it?s a must to install and regularly use good antivirus and anti-spyware software.
Deep Web Secrecy and Security is available from Amazon for Kindle. You can get your copy by clicking on the image of the e-book below. You?ll be taken to the page where it?s featured. Add it to your cart to start the order process.

I?m planning to have Conrad Jaeger on as a DestinySurvival Radio guest in the next few weeks to talk about online security. It?s an issue that needs clarification and perspective.
What do you think? How concerned are you about your privacy online? What steps are you taking to insure Internet security? Leave a comment and let?s discuss it.
WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) ? He is looking for the magic again in all these coffee shops and diners. On the farm pasture scorched by drought, on the state fairgrounds where he got the beer and the pork chop he can't stop talking about. In the school library and the local bar, President Barack Obama is coming back to Iowans as if he wants to reconnect with old friends, telling them he needs one more shot.
"This is really where our movement began ? here in Iowa," Obama tells people jammed into a small middle-school gym in Marshalltown. "We had a conversation about how we move our country in a direction where everybody has opportunity, where everybody has got a shot."
"And we know that journey is not done yet."
Coatless and tieless, an upbeat Obama has spent three days in Iowa this week, his longest sustained campaigning in any one state yet, as he looks to win six of the 270 electoral votes needed for victory.
He has been speaking and drinking and eating his way through the state ? "Who else wants one?" he yells to a small group of onlookers at a sno cone stand in Denison ? because in Iowa, politics is all about winning over voters one by one, by word of mouth. Obama's higher personal favorability ratings over Republican Mitt Romney also could be a big plus in places like Iowa ? especially at a time when voters in the most competitive states are seeing a slew of negative ads daily and as the Republican challenger works to undercut the president's strength.
Four years after the voters here sent him on his way to the White House, he's drawing loud and enthusiastic crowds; a man in the Waterloo one shouts, "Four more beers!" resurrecting the cheer from a night earlier at the fair when Obama bought a round. And he seems remarkably at ease for an incumbent president facing a spirited challenge at a time of 8.3 percent unemployment.
Obama, it seems, has been everywhere.
He dropped by the Coffee Connection in Knoxville, where he chatted up the owner, a Republican running for local office. He hit the gym at Aspen Active off Fleur Drive in Des Moines, near his airport hotel. He bought a Bud Lite at a bar in college town Cedar Falls. In Cascade, Obama walked into a high school library where teachers were getting ready for the upcoming school year. "What do you want me to know?" he asked, opening up their discussion about education policy for questions.
He made a surprise visit to the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, a must-stop for any politician looking for votes. "I still have pictures of me and Sasha at the fair," Obama told one of the fair's organizers after buying an admission ticket and picking up a navy blue state fair baseball cap, emblazoned with this year's slogan, "Nothing Compares." He took a picture with the fair queen, ate a pork chop with his hands and drank a Bud Lite, all while a TV crew trails him for footage in an upcoming campaign ad.
In Dubuque, first lady Michelle Obama joined Obama at a campaign rally for the first time in months. Mrs. Obama asked him if he got a "fried Twinkie" at the state fair and then vouched for him, calling him the "son of a mother who struggled" and the grandson of a woman who watched as men she trained were promoted ahead of her.
"Your president knows what it means when a family struggles," Mrs. Obama said ? a not-so-subtle counter to Romney's recent efforts to question Obama's character.
It wasn't all personal touch for the Obamas. There was policy, too, from the president.
He traveled to a parched corn farm in Missouri Valley with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, a former two-term Iowa governor, to promise to take steps to help farmers. On the front yard of the McIntosh family farm, Obama said the USDA would buy up tens of millions of dollars in pork and chicken to help farmers get through the drought. "We're not just talking about a few strips of bacon here," Obama said.
At a farm in Haverhill, the president gazed at massive white wind turbines rotating in the distance, urging Congress to pass a tax credit for producers of wind energy, an approach that Romney opposes.
Yet, for all the seeming familiarity of this trip, Obama's second dance has at times seemed distant, a big black bus marked with the presidential seal leading a trail of dark Chevrolet Suburbans, vans and police cruisers.
Onlookers watch from their front yards, in front of Casey's General Stores or Dollar Generals, on street corners and from folding chairs. The crowds are rarely rude ? this is Iowa after all ? but often give off a look of ambivalence, like an electorate taking stock of their options, trying to figure out which way to go.
Iowa voters know Romney from last winter's Iowa caucuses, when he lost to Rick Santorum by a razor-thin margin, and from his first presidential bid in 2008. But they know Obama perhaps better than any group of voters in America.
Still, some Obama backers say they're worried.
Says Justin Owen, a 31-year-old farm equipment salesman from Boone who brought his family to a rally this week: "The ones who do support the president are very quiet about it."
Others are more confident.
"I'd almost bet my house that in two months you're going to see Iowa" in Obama's column, says Cecilia Parks, a retired school teacher from Anamosa, who cheered Obama during Wednesday's rally in Dubuque. "Obama still has the grassroots here in Iowa. I think in the next couple of months, you're going to see a real surge."

Yammer today announced a bunch of new features and partnerships to its flagship enterprise social networking app.
These were in the works before Microsoft bought it for $1.2 billion in a deal that closed in July 19.
Yammer is adding an "inbox" feature, which aggregates all the conversations and streams that mention the user or require a reply. A person can easily scan the inbox to see the stuff that needs attention. says Yammer CTO and cofounder, Adam Pisoni. The Inbox can be accessed from a smartphone, too.
The second big feature is called "Online Now." It's an update to the messaging app, making it seem more like a chat app. It allows people to message each other, or engage in allowing multi-user conversations.
Yammer tweaked the navigation and redesigned the homepage, too. It now showcases other hot content, like trending files and pages, which are personalized to the user's interests. All personalization is done automatically, says Pisoni.
Yammer also added a bunch of new partners, just as if it wasn't owned by Microsoft. These include HootSuite, FuzeBox, Bevalley, Mindflash, and a few others. These apps can now contribute to the Yammer stream.
The biggest news about this product update is that Microsoft was hands-off about it, says Pisoni.
"It shows? Microsoft's commitment to continue with our product roadmap, and our partner strategy," he told BI.

A key trend in luxury marketing is the concept of ?farm-to-table marketing?. There are important clues here for marketing luxury real estate. It is not just about offering the facts. It is about telling the story that adds color and engages the emotions.
Farm-to-table marketing in the arena of fine dining while traveling and also for local restaurants is based upon the premise that consumers want to know the point of origin from which their food comes. Chez Panisse restaurant in Berkeley (who pioneered this trend decades ago) credits menu items by mentioning the local purveyor. Here is an excerpt from the appetizer section of their menu: ?Cannard Farm rocket (arugula) and chervil salad with buttered radish and onion toasts.?
In applying farm-to-table marketing, your luxury real estate message should include the overall story of the home you are selling. The potential buyer wants the ?back story? which allows them to become enchanted with the property. When they purchase it, it becomes the story they tell their friends and their reasons for buying the home. For instance, if the home is a rammed earth home, a video on the making of this type of home would make an excellent adjunct to the presentation of the listing on your website.
A few years ago a ?rastra block? home was sold in the California wine country. A rastra block is made from recycled Styrofoam. This home had photo voltaic cells and solar panels. The entire house was a story of ?farm-to-table? origins. The property site itself was originally a stone quarry that produced the stone used to build the streets of San Francisco. The home has recycled architectural elements from France, Africa, and Mexico.
By breaking down the property?s story and telling sub-stories of its various elements through ancillary rich media, i.e., photos and video, you can engage more buyers. You also have a surefire way to standout from your competition.

New website encourages anyone to come up with clever uses for untapped patents and inventions
GOT an inventive mind and feel like making a few thousand pounds? Then you might have some fun with Marblar.com, a website that will go live in late August. The site will ask users to suggest lucrative uses for "underexploited" patented technologies - with cash prizes of up to ?10,000 for the best ideas.
"There are a lot of dormant inventions just gathering dust in research universities," says Daniel Perez, Marblar's CEO. "This is taxpayer or philanthropy-funded research that isn't demonstrating the impact it could. So we'll simply be asking our users how they would use this invention."
Marblar is getting universities on board, as well as UK organisations like the Medical Research Council and the Science and Technology Facilities Council, all of which have patented technologies that they would like to squeeze more cash out of.
To test the idea, Marblar posted a technique patented by the University of Southampton that allows DNA nucleotides to be knitted together without using an enzyme. Days later, a University of Cambridge academic hit on a new use for the technique in screening potential DNA-based therapies. "This was a problem that the inventor wasn't really aware existed, much less that his discovery could solve," says Gabriel Mecklenburg of Marblar. "There may be now be start-up ideas around this tech."
"If Marblar leads to ideas like that it could well work. Any innovation like that has got to be encouraged," says Peter Finnie, a patent attorney with Gill, Jennings and Every in London.
Marblar is the latest in a string of "open innovation" sites that attempt, in one way or another, to encourage inventiveness online. "We're seeing many new online ways of interacting with the crowd," says Finnie. "All are geared at coming up with ideas you wouldn't have thought of yourself."
For instance, he says, ArticleOne asks its community of users to find "prior art" - published documents that show an invention existed before it was patented - to quash patents that firms have been accused of infringing. Again, there are cash awards available, as there are at Innocentive, where companies and NGOs present problems that they need solving - such as how to develop a portable rainwater storage system for the developing world. On the flipside, IbridgeNetwork and Yet2.com post university and corporate research in a bid to find people who'll license their technology to commercialise it.
"But most of these are dating sites for intellectual property," says Perez. "We're making tech transfer fun and gamifying it."
Fun it may be - but Finnie warns that there could be problems if users give away for a mere ?10,000 an idea that ends up kicking off a billion-dollar industry. This could happen, he says, because most patents cite the industrial application of an invention. "So the person who comes up with a new application may be regarded in law as the inventor. Yet they may just give the idea away online."
Perez believes Marblar's prize money will suffice. "Users have to ask why they are doing this. Are they doing it to make millions? Or as a bit of fun - creative problem-solving? In our tests, winners did not feel taken advantage of."
Time will tell, says Finnie. "Marblar expects to see start-ups forming around the contributed ideas. But that's when people start to fall out."
